Virginia Congressman Gerry Connolly has passed away at 75, weeks after announcing his cancer had returned.
Connolly fought esophageal cancer since 2024. Despite “grueling” treatments, the illness returned this year.
Connolly died at home on May 21, surrounded by family. “He lived to give back,” his family shared.
From local government to Congress, Connolly served the people of Virginia with dedication for three decades.
Known as a “fierce defender of democracy,” Connolly made oversight, transparency, and public trust his legacy.
He stepped down as top Democrat on the Oversight Committee in April after defeating AOC for the role in January.
His death marks the third House Democrat to die since March, shifting the GOP majority to 220-212.

Rep. Sylvester Turner and Rep. Raúl Grijalva also passed away earlier this year — all from cancer-related illnesses.
In his final message, Connolly mourned Joe Biden’s cancer diagnosis: “My heart is with him,” he wrote.
He is survived by his wife, Cathy, and daughter, Caitlin. His legacy “colors our region,” his family said.
“With no rancor and a full heart, I move into this final chapter…” Connolly’s farewell was filled with grace.
